This is a reasonably compact, simply but smartly and elegantly designed, and very well made portable Bluetooth speaker, which enables you to listen to your music collection completely wirelessly from your smartphone, tablet, or other Bluetooth enabled device. It has the very funky and cool additional feature of a flashing LED light display to give you a mini-disco experience.
The orb shaped speaker measures approximately 5.4 inches (13.8 cm) tall, with a maximum diameter of about 5.4 inches (13.8 cm). It's relatively lightweight too, a little over 450g. It's roughly the size of a melon or cauliflower.
The body of the speaker is made with lightweight metals and matt black plastics, which give a good tactile sensation and conveys an impression that it's a quality bit of kit. The orb shaped speaker has a flat base which means that it can stand upright without rolling about, the flat base is big enough that you'd need to knock the speaker quite hard to get it rolling over.
A fine metal mesh material wraps around the upper half of the speaker unit, and there are dark grey coloured silicone strips around the circumference which bear the logo "marsboy". The speaker certainly looks very stylish and contemporary, and the minimalist design orb shape helps it to stand out a little from the very large crowd of boxy shaped Bluetooth speakers. It certainly looks and feels like an expensive item of equipment.
The speaker comes with a rubberised USB to mini-USB charge lead, approximately 30 inches (75 cm) length, which is a useful length. The lead has a chunky 5 mm diameter, which means that it ought to prove fairly resistant to fragmentation and breakages. You simply plug the mini-USB connector into the mini-USB port located on the back of the speaker, and then plug the USB connector into the USB port on your desktop PC, laptop or USB compatible socket plug.
A small LED illuminates red on the back of the speaker when it's charging, and then turns off automatically once fully charged. I figure on a charge up time from flat battery, of very roughly 3 to 5 hours. Once fully charged, the speaker should be operable for up to 12 hours, dependent of course upon the volume used, but in any event, the 12 hour playtime compares very favourably with the majority of other compact Bluetooth speakers.
The speaker comes with a standard 3.5 mm jack audio lead, so that you can make a wired connection between this speaker and a non-Bluetooth enabled device if required. This lead too is approximately 30 inches (75 cm) long and has a diameter of 4 mm, which means that it should prove quite durable even with regular usage. There's an aux/audio in socket on the back of the speaker to make the wired connection to the non-Bluetooth device. The power on-off button is adjacent to the mini-USB port.
The top of the speaker has 5 soft-touch silicone push button controls, including a multi-function one for play/pause and to accept/reject calls, two others for volume up and down and track shuttle forwards and backwards, one to operate the Bluetooth function, and one to operate the different options for the LED disco lights. The back of the speaker has a TF card slot for a micro SD card to be inserted, if you wish to listen to music in that format.
Pairing this speaker with your device is child's play. You turn on the speaker and a voice announces that it's making the Bluetooth connection. You go to settings on your smartphone, tablet or other device, select Bluetooth from the menu, and then choose the device option B2. The voice announces when the pairing is successful. I've had absolutely no trouble pairing this speaker with any of my iPad, iPod, iPhone 6 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD, or with my girlfriend's iPhone 5. The Bluetooth connectivity range is stated to be about 15 metres (49.5 feet), although this will obviously lessen if there's one or more walls between the speaker and the Bluetooth device. I haven't tested this 15 m range myself, although if I have the speaker in my kitchen and am stood at the end of my back garden, which is about 10 metres away, the connection isn't lost or inconsistent.
The speaker quality and performance belies the relatively diminutive proportions of this gadget. The bass response is sufficiently full and thick, and whilst it won't rouse the inhabitants of the nearest graveyard, or shake photos and pictures loose from the walls, it's very far removed from a weak or tinny bass sound. Bass guitar and bass drum have the thud and thump which you'd expect from a decent bass speaker. The mid-range is very well defined and warm, whilst the treble response is satisfyingly crisp and clear, without ever being shrill, distorted or screechy.
Vocals sound especially good, as do synth chords and lead line sounds. Piano is bright and sparkly, and guitar notes are so well defined that you can sometimes even hear the guitarist's fingers sliding up and down the frets.
You can turn the volume right up to maximum, without any distortion of the sound output, at which point you have a very well balanced and satisfyingly clear sound. The speaker output is a seemingly modest 5W, but it definitely makes very effective use of every single one of those watts.
You can accept calls from your smartphone through this speaker, by depressing the pause/accept call button, the speaker has an in-built microphone specifically for this purpose.
What especially distinguishes this little speaker from most other comparable speakers, is the uber-cool disco style flashing LED function, which lights up the whole of the front of the speaker, with colours including red, green, blue, white and orange. You can choose between 7 different light pattern modes, one uses just the one colour white on constant, others use multiple colour combinations with the LEDs flashing in spirals and other attractive patterns.
The light patterns are synchronised with whatever music you're listening to - it's a really cool feature of this product and one which definitely helps it to stand out from the over-crowded Bluetooth speaker market.
It's a small pity that the speaker doesn't come with a remote control, that would really be the icing on the cake, but that's only a relatively minor grumble. The product comes with a concise user guide leaflet, which is written in plain English and is very easy to follow and understand.
This is an excellent compact Bluetooth speaker, ideal for picnics, barbecues, camping, caravanning, weekends away at hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation, holidays abroad, in the home and garden, at the beach and riverside, and so on and so forth. Obviously, with the flashing LED feature, it's even more impressive when used in a dark environment, for instance a night-time barbecue, etc.
The product comes with an 18 month manufacturer's warranty, which is obviously quite a bit better than the more commonplace one year warranty.
Suffice it to say, this is an impressively functional, user friendly, very smart looking and capably performing Bluetooth speaker. Very highly recommended.
